Model United Nations was first brought to our school in the late 1990s, by a British teacher, and since then, has grown from the 60-person conference it then was, to become the CACMUN you can see, and hopefully experience, today.
When it comes to discussing the history of CACMUN, one name that always comes to mind is that of Mr. Alan Shanks, former chemistry teacher and Headmaster of our school. He was the MUN coordinator for the American School of Caracas before he came to the Anglo and always believed that students could learn just as much, if not more, from the MUN experience than from sitting in a classroom and taking notes. He was a crucial person in liaising between CACMUN organizers and school directives, thus ensuring that students who wished to participate, could do so with the full support of the school.
CACMUN I In November of 2005, the first-ever Anglo-organized MUN conference took place. It was supported by Mr. Alan Shanks and Mr. Walbran. The secretary-general this year was Juanita Molano. It was a small conference, attended by only around sixty people, and was hosted in our school’s library and classrooms.
CACMUN II Two years after the first CACMUN conference, CACMUN II took place in March of 2007. The secretary-general was Carolina Garcia and the conference took place at COmpensar Convention Centre, after being inaugurated at the William Shakespeare Theatre. Approximately 300 people attended.
CACMUN III One year on, secretary-general Juan Pablo Toro and his team hosted the largest CACMUN conference thus far when 500 delegates from around Colombia came together to debate, negotiate and resolve. The organizing team is also credited with creating our motto “Eyes on Utopia, feet on Earth.”
CACMUN IV Again hosted in March, this conference was led by secretary-general Manuel Contreras and his team. This conference was held in Compensar Convention Centre and its opening ceremony was held at the William Shakespeare Theatre.
CACMUN V Unlike previous CACMUN Conferences this was actually held in the Bogota Chambers of Commerce, and its secretary-general was Alejandro Rueda Saenz, who has spent his time since graduating from the Anglo working as an economist alongside Humberto de La Calle during his presidential campaign.
After the first five CACMUN conferences, our school, Colegio Anglo Colombiano, and the Colegio Nueva Granada came together to create a new, even more, ambitious project; UMUN. It was made possible thanks to Mr. Alan Shanks and Eric Habegger, who both saw the learning opportunities when taking part in MUN conferences.
UMUN I A highly ambitious conference hosted by two separate schools. It was inaugurated at the CNG, however, the model itself took place at the Anglo. Its secretary-general was Valentina Gutierrez.
CACMUN VI Secretary-General Juan Francisco Ariztizabal, it was inaugurated at the William Shakespeare Theatre in 2012 and took place in CAFAM-Floresta.
UMUN II In March of 2013, another edition of the successful UMUN conference two years prior. The Secretary-General representing the Anglo was Mateo Jimenez, and the model took place at the Chambers of Commerce in Chapinero.
UMUN III Yet another UMUN conference, this time hosted in CAFAM-Floresta. The Anglo Colombiano Secretary-General was Alejandro Ricaurte.
UMUN IV Hosted in March of 2015, a successful conference hosted at the beautiful Hotel Tequendama in the center of the city. Our schools’ Secretary-General was Alejandro Barreiro.
UMUN V The last of the UMUN conferences thus far, this was hosted in CAFAM-Floresta, and our school’s Secretary-general representative was once again Alejandro Barreiro.
