The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six main organs within the UN. It has 15 members at any given time, five of them being permanent members of these being: The United States of America, The French Republic, The Russian Federation, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and The People’s Republic of China. The UNSC is tasked with maintaining international peace and security, recommending new UN members to the United Nations General Assembly, and approving changes to the UN charter. It has the authority to deploy peacekeeping missions, to enact international sanctions, and to allow military action. The UNSC was created along with the UN as a whole after the events of the Second World War, in order to correct the errors of the League of Nations. Historically the UNSC has been involved in the Korean War, The Suez Crisis, and the fall of the USSR, among many others. The resolutions enacted by this committee are usually enforced by the UN peacekeeping force. Having shown the power the UNSC holds in the global scene, it is key to understand what it can achieve.
